Scottish businesses urged to recycle food waste
19th January 2016
Food businesses in Scottish towns urged to recycle more as part of new regulations. Businesses which generate more than 5kg of food waste per week are now required by law to have it collected separately for recycling. Changes to the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 came into force on 1 January, replacing a previous requirement with the weekly limit set at 50kg of food waste.
Recycling food is a big part of the Scottish Government’s strategy for hitting its climate change targets. When food begins to break down, it produces a gas called methane, which traps even more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.
Stopping food going into landfill could prevent the equivalent of 27 million tonnes of greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere, which would have the same effect as taking 166,000 cars off Scotland’s roads.
Viridor is helping Scottish businesses avoid fines and meet the new regulations by providing a food recycling service that turns the food waste into a resource such as compost or green electricity. Viridor has also signed up to the voluntary Resource Sector Commitment. This offers businesses assurance of a high-quality recycling service which also helps them comply with the regulations.
Graeme Milne, Viridor’s Scottish Strategic Sales Manager, said
“The Waste (Scotland) Regulations represent a paradigm shift in how Scotland manages its waste resources. At their core they aim to help Scotland become one of the most resource efficient nations in Europe and we are proud to be supporting thousands of Scotland’s local businesses get regulation ready with a simple 1, 2, 3, (4) Waste and recycling service. We are committed to helping local businesses transform their waste.”
Iain Gulland, Chief Executive of Zero Waste Scotland, said:
“Since the regulations were introduced, businesses and the environment have felt the benefits.” He estimates that Scottish businesses could save £192 million a year if they reduced the amount of food waste going to landfill.
