Ealing the latest London borough transforming waste with Viridor
30th May 2016
Ealing Council is the latest in a string of the capital’s council’s who have chosen to boost their recycling with Viridor. The move will see the council move to a simpler, consumer friendly ‘commingled’ recycling system allowing residents to recycle more in one blue bin, whilst allowing advanced technology to do the rest. The contract award is a further move to the council’s 2018 target to transform waste and give resources new life by hitting a 50% recycling target.
The new contract will see the current arrangement of recycling being separated at the kerbside by collection crews cease. In June the majority of Ealing residents will switch to a new system of alternate weekly collections using a blue wheelie bin for mixed dry recyclables. Rubbish will be collected one week and recycling the next, with the switch aiming to boost recycling helping the council achieve its target of recycling 50% of all its waste by 2018 and help deliver an annual saving of £1.7million.
The partnership will commence in the summer of 2016, and 22,000 tonnes of comingled recyclate that is collected from approximately 100,000 households will be transferred to Viridor’s state-of-the-art Materials Recycling Facility in Crayford, south east London where the material such as paper, card, plastic bottles, cans and glass will be sorted using optical sortation, mechanical process and manual quality control.
Chris Jonas, Director of Business Development for Viridor commented on the contract:
“The new partnership is great news for Viridor, for Ealing and its residents. By working together we are able to combine a simpler collection system and one of the UK’s most advanced recycling facilities which will drive recycling rates and increase the amount of high quality recyclate that UK manufacturers are able to use in our ever increasing circular economy.”
Keith Townsend, Executive Director, Environment and Leisure at Ealing Council added:
“Following a competitive tendering process we are delighted to enter into a contract with Viridor for the processing of our household recycling. Viridor are positioned at the cutting-edge of new technologies and the Crayford Materials Recycling Facility enables us to recover the value from as much of the material our residents place in their recycling bins every week.”
