Community projects to benefit from Beddington ERF

21st November 2016

Do you know of a community led organisation or project in South London area? Last month (27 October) Viridor launched the Beddington Community Benefit Fund and officially welcomes applications to share part of the funding pot worth over £975k spread across the 25 years of the partnership between Viridor and the South London Waste Partnership.

Viridor is currently constructing an Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) in Beddington and once operational in 2018 will transform non-recyclable waste from the four Boroughs of the South London Waste Partnership (Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton) into enough renewable energy to power around 30,000 homes which will be sent to the National Grid. Associated with the partnership is a pot of community funding to give an added boost to community projects in the area.

The Fund comprises of an initial sum of £250,000 for organisations and projects based in the London Boroughs of Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton. This will be added to with annual contributions of £25,000 and a further top up payment will be made after ten years. Projects that demonstrate support and benefit to the local community will be eligible for funding.

Cllr Pathumal Ali, a member of the Community Fund Panel said of the launch: “It is with great pleasure that we are able to launch the Community Benefit Fund associated with the Beddington ERF, living in the local area the funding panel comprises of representatives from community forums and we will be well placed to advocate the fund and encourage applications of up to £30,000. If anyone is unsure of whether they would be eligible, please do not hesitate to contact me or any member of the panel.”

Mike Stafford, Regional Manager for Viridor added: “We are proud to be working with the South London Waste Partnership to help them divert over 95% of their residual waste away from landfill and generate energy at the same time. We are constructing the £205m cutting-edge Energy Recovery Facility and with investment in infrastructure also comes a commitment to support the communities in which we work, I encourage any local community projects to investigate whether they will be eligible for support from the fund.”
