Viridor Chief backs investing in Perth

18th February 2015

The Chief Executive of one of the UK’s largest resources, recycling and renewable energy companies this week backed Perth as an international investment location. Mr. Ian McAulay, Chief Executive of FTSE 250 Pennon Group’s resources arm, Viridor, backed the city on a visit to the firm’s £23m waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) on Shore Road, Perth.

The facility, one of Europe’s leading authorised e-waste treatment facilities, recycles over 350,000 Scottish TVs each year, 230,000 fridges and small domestic appliances from 96% of Scottish councils, recovering over 95% of inputs for re-manufacture.

Employing over eighty staff, the business is currently investing a further £300,000 in next generation recycling technology at the site to allow the smarter recovery of plastics and circuit boards from modern flat-screen TVs.

Mr Ian McAulay, Chief Executive of Viridor, said:

“At Viridor we sift, sort and segregate what once was seen as ‘waste’ to transform it into valuable commodities; whether that’s quality materials that can be recycled into new products, or renewable energy.

“Our advanced recycling hub at Perth is an excellent example of just what we do. A great combination of the latest technology and a highly skilled, motivated workforce making a real difference to Scotland’s environment and economy. What’s more, being back in Perth highlighted what a great, international location the city is in which to invest and do business.”

Mr. Stuart Oliver, Investment and Marketing Officer for Invest in Perth, said:

“The Perth City Region is one of Scotland’s fastest growing areas and has a strong and stable economy, broad business base, highly skilled workforce and offers a highly supportive and collaborative environment in which to do business.

“Business of all sizes and across the majority of sectors thrive here and enjoy operating in an area that underpins its strategic business benefits with a fantastic quality of life. Viridor is in great company with other industry leaders such as Aviva and SSE.

“Seeing at first hand the scale of Viridor’s operations is a real eye opener. Their ongoing investment in world-class recycling technology is a reminder of how vital they are to driving sustainability in Perth and across Scotland.”
