Manchester Bin Men form Secret Street Crew

08th October 2014

It is seen as one of Britain’s less glamorous jobs, but Viridor’s ‘bin men’ are trying to change the negative stereotypes and show another side to the magic ‘bin fairies’ that take away your waste.

On Sunday at 6pm, five of Manchester’s finest ‘bin men’ will feature on Sky 1’s Ashley Banjo’s Secret Street Crew. Now in its third series, the programme sees Ashley Banjo and Britain’s Got Talent winners’ Diversity secretly teach unlikely groups how to street dance; culminating in a surprise show in front of unsuspecting family and friends.

As part of the filming, the group met Ashley and Diversity at one of Viridor’s waste transfer stations in Bury, where they performed a dance routine inside the recycling block. Over the course of three weeks, the group of bin men practiced in secret on top of their day jobs and performed the final routine at the Trafford Centre’s Great Hall following the Recycle for Greater Manchester ‘Rethink Fashion’ show. The final performance was in front of the largest audience that Ashley has experienced over three series’ of the show.

One of the ‘dancing bin men’ Kev Steele, 46 from Urmston said;

“My son and wife are both keen dancers and I’ve always been the odd-one-out. I wanted to take part in Ashley Banjo’s Secret Street Crew to see if I could make them proud of me. It was a tough few weeks with lots of ups and downs but all in all, a great experience and being able to learn from Ashley and Diversity was brilliant.”

Joe Parker, 23 from Manchester, added;

“Whenever we say we work in the waste industry people immediately think that we’re scruffy and smelly which isn’t always true. I really enjoy my job and the people I work with are great. Being part of a street crew was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done but I’m very happy that I’ve done it.”

Speaking about the TV series Ashley Banjo said;

“It always shocks us how all the groups are so different and seeing their final performances makes us so proud. It’s about people stepping out of their comfort zones and discovering what they can do if they try.”

The episode of Ashley Banjo’s Secret Street Crew featuring the Viridor bin men will air on Sky 1 on Sunday 12th October, at 6pm.
