Another opportunity to explore the Beddington Farmlands – June open day
13th June 2018
Viridor is offering another opportunity to visit the 120-hectare Beddington Farmlands on 14 June with the landfill team hosting an open day for members of the community. The event follows successful open days in 2016 and 2017 and will include a walk across the wet grassland habitats which are currently under construction.
The Beddington landfill site receives residual waste from the households of the South London Waste Partnership (Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton). As the landfill site is restored, habitats are being created to support bird and wildlife including wetlands, meadow and grassland. In the future, the £205m Beddington Energy Recovery Facility (ERF), will safely transform non-recycled waste from the four boroughs into 26 MW of electricity – enough to power approximately 30,000 homes and the facility itself.
During the open day, members of the public will receive a presentation about the history of the site, see what happens to household waste after it has been put in the bin and also about how the new energy recovery facility will transform non-recyclable waste into energy. Following a safety briefing, visitors will be guided out onto the Beddington Farmlands to explore the restoration work currently underway that is creating a haven for wildlife in south London.
Pete Walker, lead aftercare steward for Viridor said of the open day: “The team onsite have continued to create habitats across the Beddington Farmlands during the winter months. We have continued to work with the Conservation and Access Management Committee and Conservation Science Group to refine the designs for the wet grassland.
“We are focused on managing the habitats to maturity and then being able to open up sections of the site to the public. Being able to show members of the local community what we do is vitally important. The Beddington Farmlands has a rich history and is now home to a wide range of birds and wildlife and being able to develop a greater understanding of the site is great news.”
The open day is free of charge but will have limited spaces. Two sessions will take place; one at 10 am and another at 12.45pm with bookings be made on a first come first served basis. Anyone interested in booking onto an open day should contact Beddington@newgatecomms.com.
