Viridor lights up West Barns for Christmas
21st November 2017
Viridor, Scotland’s leading recycling and renewable energy company, is bringing some early festive cheer to West Barns by helping light up the village high street with brand new Christmas lights.
The company has donated £1,200 to the West Barns Christmas Lights Fund, with the donation going towards some new lights for the local community near its new £177m Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) at Dunbar in East Lothian.
Scott Reynolds, Dunbar ERF Project Manager at Viridor, said: “We are dedicated to supporting the local communities in which we work and with such a great link between our energy recovery facility and the energy required to power Christmas lights we couldn’t think of a better way to support West Barns.
“We are very much looking forward to celebrating the launch of the Christmas lights with the residents and we are so pleased we have been able to fund some much-needed brand new lights.”
Kenny Borthwick, from the West Barns Christmas Lights committee, said: “We are thrilled to have the support of Viridor to our local community. The Christmas Lights switch-on is a much-anticipated event in the village each year and a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to make it happen.
“We have desperately needed to replace the lights so this generous donation has enabled us to do just that.”
The main building of the ERF has now been constructed and the majority of the cladding in place, while internally work on the mechanical equipment installation is continuing and nearly half of the 250km of cabling required to power and control the plant has been installed.
Initial commissioning will begin before Christmas to check the operating systems before waste is received from the spring of next year. Viridor has completed the recruitment of operation and maintenance staff who will manage the facility, with the majority of the team coming from East Lothian with a number of former Cockenzie staff finding employment at the energy recovery facility.
The official Christmas lights switch-on will take place on Saturday 25 November at 6 pm followed by teas and coffees in the village hall.
