Sheffield City council run a variety of markets in their city, our client being one of the UK’s best indoor markets with over 90 independent traders. Viridor service the main market in Sheffield along with surrounding retail units at the indoor market. Viridor has provided these services since 2013.
With the redevelopment of the market, the task for the customer with regards to their waste management became even more challenging. Due to the fact the new site housed a mixed-use of occupants – retail, restaurants and a cinema, the waste and recycling requirement became more complex, with a need for segregation of a wider range of waste from food to glass.
Identifying recycling and recovery opportunities:
Viridor recognised that this redevelopment of the site would come with its challenges and opportunities regarding the waste services, and carried out an audit to identify improvements that would enhance the credentials of the site.
Viridor now employs three members of staff who are permanently based on site as waste operatives. This ensures a consistent service while maintaining high levels of recycling segregation to ensure top quality materials.
The service offers the client 100% diversion from landfill by using our Energy Recovery Facility and our local Transfer Station in Sheffield. By using our local depots it means that we can provide prompt service.
With the customers only having to speak to their local Viridor customer service for all of their waste service needs; it provides a single point of contact so that any requests are handled efficiently and effectively.
With the use of the local depots for waste and recycling, this has also resulted in a reduction of the client’s carbon footprint.
