Background

A tertiary education site with multiple campuses across the city, this South West based university has a wide range of requirements when it comes to waste disposal: with multiple waste streams, public use bins and confidential waste needing to be catered for on a high scale.

Further to this, as part of the university’s Visions and Values, the university states we are a higher education leader for sustainability; economic, environmental and social demonstrating their commitment to finding a long term waste partner who would support their vision for a more sustainable future.

Problems

The university was seeking a waste contractor who would be able to provide an integrated solution, catering for all waste streams while actively helping them on their way to becoming a more sustainable site.

The university has set KPIs for achieving its sustainability goals which are monitored in monthly review meetings. In order to meet these KPIs the university required a service that would be committed to providing bespoke reporting, detailing end destinations for its waste streams.

Solutions

Though already committed to their sustainability vision, Viridor was able to provide innovative solutions to further the university’s standing as higher education leaders in environmental sustainability, while providing a total waste solution:

  • By offering a total waste solution, dealing with all the university’s waste streams, Viridor not only helped the university toward achieving zero waste to landfill, but also saved it money.
  • Viridor are big believers in educating about recycling. That’s why we launched the zero waste to landfill pledge through an Eat, Sleep, Recycle, Repeat event, to help engage the students and make them aware of the importance of segregating their waste.
  • Monthly reporting tracks all aspects of our service, highlighting room for improvements. Viridor have also provided PR and promotional support to help the university achieve its end goal and keep students actively involved.
  • Viridor provided the university with a fixed price for 3 years for all disposal prices and transport costs. Helping it achieve both their environmental and economic goals in one.
