Viridor's "Fred The Shred" Raises 750 To Tackle Testicular Cancer
Viridor's Fred Gibson, an HGV driver at the recycling, energy recovery and waste management company's Bonnyrigg glass recycling operation, recently raised £750 for charity by shaving a beard he had grown for over ten years. Fred, who has nearly twenty years service with the business acquired by Viridor in 2004, presented the cheque to NHS Lothian's Western General Testicular Cancer fund.
Mr. Gibson, who has a long history of charitable activity for organisations including the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Breakthrough Breast Cancer, chose to shave his beard for the fifth time and support those affected by testicular cancer after a friend was affected by the disease.
Mr. Gibson said
"Testicular cancer has for too long been a taboo subject but it's important. It's an issue very close to my heart and that's why I was happy to do my bit, raising awareness and much needed funds in the process."
Commenting after the charity shave, Mr. Gibson added:
"On the plus side I've not had a 99 cone for ten years. On the down side I'll have to start buying after shave."
Jamie McBride, Scottish Manager at Viridor's glass operations in Bonnyrigg commented:
"Fred is a great guy with a big heart. Viridor was delighted to support his campaign and the money he raises will make a big difference to those in need. In addition, Fred has made us all think about a sensitive issue and his important message - no matter what your age, if in doubt, check in out."
