Viridor statement in response to the Sunday Telegraph article on composting
In response to the Sunday Telegraph article on composting sites and their perceived risks Viridor refer you to our industry association for their response, please visit the Association for Organics Recycling at www.organics-recycling.org.uk
As one of the UK’s leading recycling, waste management and renewable energy companies, Viridor operates and manages a number of commercial composting sites that produce compost in one of two ways; open windrow and in-vessel composting (IVC).
Viridor’s experience ensures that any combination of organic waste can be professionally handled; whether source segregated garden waste only or a mixture of garden and kitchen waste. Both types of commercial composting operations comply with the Animal By-Product Regulations and operate to strict process control parameters that incorporate Hazard Analysis and Critical Control point (HACCP) assessment that identifies, evaluates and controls hazards that are significant for safety.
As an example an open windrow composting site will adopt a turning regime that takes into account the direction of the prevailing wind to minimise bioaerosol exposure.
All Viridor sites are operated according to waste management licence or environmental permit conditions, which are regulated by the Environment Agency and most of the compost produced through Viridor’s sites is accredited to BSI PAS 100; the first standard for composted materials and a Quality Protocol as certified by the Association for Organics Recycling.
