Viridor Electrical Recycling
Viridor entered the business of recycling electronic and electrical equipment early in 2008, when we acquired Scotland’s leading Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) recycler and relaunched it as Viridor Electrical Recycling Ltd (VER).
Nearly one million tonnes of WEEE are currently discarded in the UK each year. However recycling rates in excess of 90 per cent are readily deliverable, given the right facilities.
VER has modern processing facilities at Perth and St Helens. We deal with all types of WEEE including TVs, fridges, all other domestic appliances and power tools.
At the plant in Perth one dedicated processing line deals with small appliances, the non VDU parts of computers, and fridges. Overall, this line recovers over 90 per cent by volume of the inputs.
The second line, which processes TVs and computer screens, is as impressive with laser cutting of cathode ray tubes to yield two different types of glass, delivering 99 per cent recycling.
Prior to changes in the law in 2007 our major customers were local authorities. It is now Producer Compliance Schemes rather than councils, who are our main customers. In practice VER collects WEEE from Household Waste Recycling Sites and other approved locations, and accepts deliveries via various road haulage contractors. We also deal with companies and councils as trade waste customers for their own WEEE.
