Our recycling strategy is simple: Quality, quality, quality.  Only if we produce and maintain high quality recycled commodities will we achieve demanding material specifications for customers in the UK and global markets.

We continue to increase our recycling capacity through investment in new facilities and acquisitions, and now recycle around 2.3 million tonnes of material a year.  We work with our local authority and private sector customers to find a recycling solution that suits them.  This includes either supporting collections that sort materials at source or providing a commingled, dry mixed recycling service.  In some cases we also manage recycling operations on the customer’s own sites.

Putting commingled recyclables into action

Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs) process large volumes of municipal and commercial and industrial dry mixed materials to produce a range of high quality outputs.

A combination of advanced mechanical sorting techniques and manual quality control is used to separate the materials.

The technologies we use at our ‘next generation’ MRFs at Bargeddie near Glasgow and Ford, West Sussex are now so sophisticated we are able to recover over 95% of the materials that go through the plants.

All of our MRFs operate under the highest quality, environmental and health and safety standards.  We supported the industry-leading Recycling Registration Standard, ensuring quality products from MRFs, upon which the proposed MRF Code of Practice is based.
