Viridor has announced that it will be providing services to St Helens Council to collect and treat commercial waste for recycling and recovery.
Viridor, which already operates two recycling facilities in St Helens, will be working closely with St Helens Council to provide their customers with industry-leading recycling and waste services. A two year contract beginning in March 2012 will see Viridor expanding their services further into the Merseyside region.
Customers will benefit from Viridor’s high levels of experience in the sector and their numerous recycling and energy recovery facilities in the region. Businesses in St Helens will still be customers of the Council and contacts remain as before, but the new contract will help them to recycle more of their waste.
Viridor’s current operations in St Helens include a glass recycling facility and an advanced electrical recycling facility, both based in Parr. The electrical recycling facility, which treats Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) from Household Waste Recycling Centres across Merseyside, including the four centres in St Helens, was officially re-opened by the Mayor of St Helens in 2009 following a £9 million investment.
Councillor Alison Bacon, Portfolio Member for Environmental Protection said; “The level of service offered to St Helens’ businesses is important and I am pleased that Viridor share a vision to continue providing a quality service to those businesses. The Viridor contract will enable customers to recycle more and local businesses using this service should be proud that they are further reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfill. The contract builds on the individual strengths of the partners and Viridor will ensure that customers see no difference to their current service; other than the colour of the truck that makes their collections.”
Steve Newman, Viridor’s regional manager said; “We are extremely happy to have been successful in this tender which fits with our strategy of continuing to expand our services into the Merseyside region. St Helens council were keen to work with a partner that can deliver tangible results, and through this contract, we will promote Viridor’s vision of transforming waste from something that is ‘thrown away’ into something that should be seen as a resource, to businesses across St Helens.”
He continued; “Commercially, Viridor has significant influence within Greater Manchester, operating from our site at Trafford Park; however, as our business grows we see it as a priority to broaden this operation across the north-west; into the Merseyside, Cheshire and Lancashire regions.”
