Recycling help for South West businesses

Viridor, one of the UK’s leading recycling companies, is helping South West businesses go green and save money this month with the launch of a regional recycling campaign.

The company has recently invested almost £300,000 to boost its recycling services in the South West for collecting glass, paper, cardboard and other materials from businesses of all shapes and sizes.

Patrick Murray, Viridor’s Regional Manager, said: “As well as helping businesses become greener by increasing their recycling rates, they should also save money by reducing the amount of waste going to landfill, which is being taxed at steadily increasing rates until it reaches £80 per tonne by 2014.

“When we start working with a business we provide a free waste audit to make sure they have the right sized containers with suitable collection frequencies and hire periods to maximise their recycling rates.”

Ongoing changes in legislation means there is increasing pressure on businesses and homeowners alike to stop sending materials to landfill that can be recycled.

Recycling more can also help improve your environmental credentials, which are becoming increasingly important in attracting new business.

Viridor’s top ten tips for making the most of your business recycling are:

- Audit all your waste and establish what can be reduced and recycled

- Assign a recycling champion to take responsibility of the recycling project

- Post recycling rates on a wall to motivate staff to achieve more

- Try to bin the bin and remove general waste containers as much as possible

- Make sure recycling bins are clearly labelled so people know where to put different materials – Viridor recommends the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) colour coding system as it is easy to understand

- Put recycling bins in a clean environment

- Avoid printing emails if you don’t have to

- Lead by example

- Reward positive examples of recycling initiatives

- Print on both sides to reduce the amount of paper you use
