Planning Permission Granted for Viridor’s Waste Treatment Facility at Lostock Works, Northwich

Viridor is pleased to confirm that Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) have resolved to grant planning permission, subject to conditions and legal agreements, for a Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT) Facility at Lostock Works to facilitate Cheshire’s Household Waste Contract.

The decision was reached following the submission of a revised planning application that clearly demonstrated that the proposals would not have an unacceptable impact on the environment or local amenities.

Earlier this month, Viridor were named provisional preferred bidder by the Cheshire Authorities to provide CWAC and Cheshire East with a solution to the handling of the areas’ residual waste (that which is left after recycling). The company is currently working closely with the Cheshire Authorities to ensure that its service proposals for the effective management of household waste offer a value for money and practicable solution.

Subject to the award of Cheshire’s Waste Contract, the MBT will be built at Lostock Gralam, to the east of Northwich and will regenerate brown field land, previously part of a local chemical works. It will safely treat residual waste, recovering recyclables and providing a source of solid recovered fuel that can be used to generate electricity at the nearby Runcorn combined heat and power plant, currently under construction.

Viridor’s Bid Manager for the Waste Treatment Contract, Symon Grasby commented: ”Following this positive planning decision, we look forward to the successful conclusion of the waste treatment contract. This plan provides the cornerstone in what we believe to be a long term and sustainable waste management solution for our partners in Cheshire West and Chester and Cheshire East.”
