Viridor has secured funding from its parent company Pennon for an Energy from Waste (EfW) Combined Heat and Power facility at Trident Park in Cardiff, and is due to begin construction in 2012.
When completed, this essential facility will safely handle 350,000 tonnes of residual waste a year and provide enough electricity to supply the equivalent of 50,000 homes.
Viridor will be commencing site investigation works on the £200million development in early October that will last approximately two weeks. This will involve excavation of part of the site, the drilling of bore holes and carrying out of standard survey work as befits a project of this size. Survey work will also be undertaken on the roundabout which leads to Glass Avenue, off Ocean Way. This is in readiness for potential improvements to the roundabout which should be implemented next year.
Discussions are continuing on engineering and procurement contracts associated with the project and, as promised, Viridor will announce in the near future (along with its chosen construction partners) opportunities for local businesses to become involved in the project that will deliver job opportunities to the local / regional workforce. It is envisaged that hundreds of construction jobs will be created throughout the three year build, and between 35-50 permanent jobs will be available when the facility becomes operational.
Viridor is keen to ensure the local community is kept abreast of all developments throughout the construction and operational phases of Trident Park EfW facility, and will shortly be setting up a community liaison group that will include local elected members and officers from the Council, Communities First, Police, residents associations and the Environment Agency.
