Disposal of marine distress flares

Scotland’s leading recycling, renewable energy and resource efficiency company today commented on a contained incident at its Oxwellmains landfill restoration facility at Dunbar, East Lothian.

Martin Grey, Scottish Communications Manager for Viridor, said:

“During the reception of waste on site, our validation procedures identified a small amount of smoke and fire from two marine distress flares contained within material collected by a refuse collection vehicle.

“Following standard operating procedures the material was immediately isolated in the reception shed located away from landfill operations, and extinguished by site personnel.  No fire service personnel were required nor was there damage or injury and the incident lasted no longer than ninety seconds.

“With the long-established site operating to the highest national and international standards, Viridor immediately notified SEPA of the receipt on non compliant waste, and the police as a precautionary measure.  Police did not attend until later the same day and returned to remove the two flares the following morning.

“As UK Recycling and Waste Management Company of the Year, Viridor continues to invest in ‘next generation’ recycling and waste management infrastructure, the development of our people and in the safe operation of our facilities.  Oxwellmains has a strong record on all fronts and we are reassured that our procedures more than adequately controlled this minor incident.”
