Application to change a landfill site planning condition is submitted

Posted 7 Sep 2010

Leading recycling, renewable energy and waste management company Viridor confirms that it has submitted a planning application in relation to its Horton landfill site near Henfield, West Sussex.

The proposed application seeks to obtain permission from West Sussex County Council to extend the time waste can be disposed of at Horton from 1 October 2010 to 1 August 2011 whilst retaining the key milestone of site restoration and closure by 1 April 2012 as stated on the existing planning permission.

The need for the extension of site operations comes after a recent assessment of remaining void and current input rates showed that the site will not be full by 1 October 2010.   This void needs to be filled in order to deliver the site contours and levels approved under the existing planning permission

Viridor will be discussing the proposals with the local community and elected representatives at the forthcoming site community liaison group meeting. Comments and feedback can also be submitted through the Viridor website where full details about the planning application will be made available shortly.

Speaking on behalf of the company, Regional Director Graham Warren said: “Viridor wants to complete the final agreed restoration of the Horton site at the earliest opportunity. As a company we are focused on recycling and renewable energy, and waste management market conditions are rapidly changing.

“Viridor remains totally committed to the existing planning requirements to fully restore the site by 1 April 2012”.

Notes

The planning application will be validated by West Sussex County Council in accordance with its own procedures and a statutory consultation would be undertaken by the authority in due course to ensure feedback from local stakeholders is taken into account when it comes to make a decision on the application.
