This Sunday (5 th June) is World Environment Day (WED) led by the United Nations Environmental Programme.
The theme for this years WED is ‘ Forests: Nature at Your Service ’. Forests cover one third of the earth’s land mass, performing vital functions and services around the world. Yet despite all of the ecological, economic, social and health benefits, we are destroying the very forests we need to live and breathe.
Viridor is encouraging all employees and customers to ‘go green’ this weekend and do something different to improve our surroundings. The name Viridor comes from the Latin ‘to be green’, and the company takes a keen interest in all things environmental. One of Viridor’s corporate charities is London based Trees for Cities who undertake tree planting initiatives in urban areas. Viridor also supports Red Rose Forest, who are creating new areas of woodland and helping to improve green spaces across Greater Manchester.
Across the country, Viridor will be taking part in different activities to mark World Environment Day
As well as the focus on forestry, the Viridor team at Recycle for Greater Manchester will be at the Trafford Centre (4 th and 5 th June) attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of clothes for re-use and recycling.
Not only will all items collected go towards the Guinness World Record attempt, but unwanted clothes will be sold in Barnardo’s shops to help transform the lives of the most vulnerable children and young people. Donating your unwanted items to charity is a great way to be green whilst helping those in need so there’s no better time to have that sort out!
Also on show will be a living room made entirely from pre-loved furniture, a Recycle Right DVD brought to you by Dave Spikey, the new Recycle IPhone Application, recycled origami art and information about how to recycle in Greater Manchester.
Interested in attending? Go to the Lower Regent Crescent, next to the T Mobile store and bring us your old clothes whilst shopping for some new ones!
