In England regulations came into force in April 2008 requiring all construction projects in excess of £300,000 to have a Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP).

The plan is a statement of how building materials and resulting waste will be managed. SWMPs should  be written at the design stage and are valid for the life of the project.

The purpose of SWMPs is to raise the profile of waste and material usage and try to improve efficiency and recycling rates.
