Unlike much of Europe, Scotland has traditionally relied heavily on landfill to manage waste. This is rapidly changing due to European, national and local policies on waste management aimed at reducing the amount of waste generated, increasing recycling and composting, recovering value and energy from waste and reducing reliance on landfill.
This includes increasing landfill tax every year by £8 per tonne, until it reaches £80 by 2014.
Viridor’s proposed rail transfer station will help transport 300,000 tonnes of residual household waste from Edinburgh and the surrounding areas that is left over after recyclable materials have been removed for re-use or recycling.
The transfer station will be located at the former Freightliner terminal at Sir Harry Lauder Road, Portobello and would transport residual waste on to Viridor’s Oxwellmains site.
Viridor anticipates the development would create up to 25 new, long term jobs.
The company is currently re-working plans to take account of points made by the Scottish Government Reporter and looks forward to bringing forward fresh proposals in due course which will be subject to public consultation at that stage.
