The ‘Viridor Street Trees’ project rewards Viridor’s key recycling customers in the North West by helping them to give something back to their local communities. Viridor is thanking its customers for maximising their recycling and recovery levels, by planting street trees in areas of interest for these businesses.
Street trees not only make a road more attractive, they help to reduce the impacts of climate change, providing shade and cooling during warm summer months, and helping to reduce the impact of flooding.
This one year pilot project will see Viridor working in partnership with Red Rose Forest, part of the Community Forest North West network, to undertake street planting projects in the region.

Gorse Hill, Trafford
The first project in the Viridor Street Trees project saw Red Rose Forest and Viridor plant street trees along Gorse Street in Trafford, near to Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium. Manchester United, through a contract with Viridor, are exploring all available options for the treatment of their waste, to reduce waste outputs and maximise recycling and recovery in keeping with the ‘Reds Go Green’ initiative.
The trees were planted during spring 2011 and students at Gorse Hill Primary School have recently helped to complete the transformation by planting bulbs which will flower in spring 2012.
