Viridor safeguards the environment by recycling, generating renewable power, safely disposing of residual wastes and managing our sites to enhance biodiversity.
Continual assessment to improve our performance is important to help us maximise benefits and mitigate any negative effects our operations may have on the environment.
We also conduct detailed studies prior to submitting planning applications for new facilities, as well as monitoring the impacts on the environment of our existing facilities - essential under our permits and licences.
Viridor plays a leading role in developing the environmental performance indicators for the waste industry as adopted by the Environmental Services Association (ESA), which incorporate those developed by the Green Alliance. We report against these annually in addition to our own Business Management System and targets.
Viridor is committed to assessing and improving the carbon footprint of its own operations, as well as its customers where possible, and we work with ESA to establish carbon management protocols for the waste management sector.
To improve our resource efficiency, we build on best practice developed across the UK, Europe and the developed world and use new technologies in our operations such as Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs), anaerobic digestion, Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT), In-Vessel composting (IVC), and Energy from Waste (EfW).
