It is not permitted, with two minor exceptions, to dispose of either tyres or shredded tyres to landfill.

This legislative requirement was introduced as part of the implementation of the Landfill Directive and recognises that there is now a good range of sustainable options for the disposal, recovery, and reuse of tyres.

These include:

Retreading
The manufacture of sports and safety surfacing materials, engineering applications in landfills and elsewhere
Thermal recovery as a substitute fuel in cement kilns

Consequently, any tyres found in waste loads deposited at landfill site will be dealt with as a non-compliant waste and may be charged accordingly. This situation may also apply to other installations if the presence of tyres was not previously declared on the transfer note’s waste description.
