Most non-hazardous waste destined for landfill disposal will have to be pre-treated before it can be legally accepted. Waste producers will be responsible for ensuring that their wastes have been treated and this must be confirmed formally with the landfill operator.

Viridor is now helping customers to meet their Duty of Care for pre-treatment of waste and undertakes these obligations for its customers as part of the service.

Wastes are defined as having been treated if the characteristics of the waste have been changed in order to achieve one of the following:

• Reduce its volume
• Reduce its hazardous nature
• Facilitate its handling
• Enhance its recovery

There will be a limited number of exceptions to the rule. These apply when waste is inert and treatment is technically unfeasible, or for wastes where treatment would not reduce the quantity, hazard, or environmental impact.

Municipal waste will not require pre-treatment as this has been deemed to have taken place where local authorities have separate collections of recyclable materials in place.
