The proposed facility will be used to helping in moving 300,000 tonnes a year of residual waste from Edinburgh and the surrounding area to its final disposal point at Oxwellmains, near Dunbar, reducing the amount of waste travelling by road
The facility would serve existing waste management contracts operated by Viridor.
Rail Transfer Station
The proposed rail transfer station is intended to play an important role in providing sustainable waste management for Edinburgh and the surrounding areas.
All waste brought to the facility will arrive in either refuse collection vehicles or bulk containers and will be enclosed to prevent litter escaping from the facility.
Waste travelling out of the transfer station by rail will be carried in enclosed rail containers so that no litter escapes.
Most waste handling and processing operations will take place within fully enclosed buildings to contain noise and ensure that there is no impact from odour on the local area.
A full noise impact assessment accompanying the planning application concludes that noise impact will only be of minor significance over the existing ambient noise level.
Waste will be handled in buildings, the doors of which will only open when waste is actually being delivered and will close again automatically.
An odour control system would be installed to ensure odour does not escape from the buildings.
Waste will only be stored on the site for up to 24 hours except at weekends when some material may remain on site within the buildings from late Saturday afternoon until Monday morning.
There will be daily inspection and cleaning of all operational areas as needed.
Robust and efficient operating practices will be employed to protect the site and the neighbourhood at all times.
