Location and access

The site has been identified in local planning policy as suitable for rail freight use.   However it has not been used for this purpose since the mid-eighties. This proposal would bring it back into its intended and protected use.

The site lies close to the main areas of waste generation, thus reducing the need to transport it over greater distances on local roads. 

The site also offers good ‘A’ road access to Edinburgh and surrounding areas. Vehicles delivering waste to the facility will principally operate outside the peak hours for traffic on Sir Harry Lauder Road, hence there would be no significant contribution to congestion in the area.

The railway line from the site allows direct access to Viridor’s existing landfill at Oxwellmains, near Dunbar which currently receives residual waste from the city and surrounding area.
