Unlike much of Scotland, the UK has traditionally relied heavily on landfill to manage waste. This is rapidly changing due to European, national and local policies on waste management aimed at reducing the amount of waste generated, increasing recycling and composting, recovering value and energy from waste and reducing reliance on landfill.

This includes increasing landfill tax every year by £8 per tonne, until it reaches £72 by 2013.

The proposed facility would enable Local Authorities to meet their targets for diverting domestic residual waste, left over after recyclable materials have been removed for re-use or recycling, away from landfill.

Viridor’s proposed Energy from Waste (EfW) facility will greatly assist authorities to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, meet demanding targets and avoid fines for non-compliance.

The proposals were amended in light of emerging Scottish Government guidance, the local Area Waste Plan and comments from the local community. Revised proposals were submitted to East Lothian Council in May 2008 and were refused by East Lothian Planning Committee in 2009.

Viridor is now awaiting a public inquiry into the application scheduled for later this year.
