In April 2009, Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) signed a 25 year Private Finance Initiative (PFI) recycling and waste management contract with Viridor Laing (Greater Manchester) Ltd. The waste management contract will provide a sustainable solution for the 1.1 million tonnes of municipal waste which GMWDA handles each year.

VLGM is a joint venture company owned by Viridor, a subsidiary of Pennon Group PLC, and John Laing PLC, who have come together to deliver this contract.

VLGM provide facilities and services to manage waste in an environmentally and economically sustainable manner. This will involve the reception, treatment and disposal of waste to increase levels of recycling, composting and recovery and reduce waste sent to landfill.

A network of new and redeveloped recycling and waste management facilities are either now in full operation or are in construction and commissioning across Greater Manchester.

As part of an ongoing improvement process to strive to meet and exceed challenging recycling and landfill diversion targets set by the European Union and the UK Government, VLGM is now consulting on proposals for a new Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) and Transfer Loading Station (TLS) at Salford Road, Bolton.

These facilities will help the region meet and exceed the challenging recycling and landfill diversion targets.
