Unlike much of Europe, the UK has traditionally relied heavily on landfill to manage waste. This is changing due to European, national and local policies on waste management aimed at reducing the amount of waste generated, increasing recycling and composting, recovering value and energy from waste and reducing reliance on landfill.

Plymouth City Council, Devon County Council and Torbay Council have joined together to form the South West Devon Waste Partnership (SWDWP) to develop a sustainable waste management strategy for the next 25 to 30 years. Central to this is the safe, efficient and cost-effective treatment of residual household waste, left over after recyclable materials have been removed for re-use or recycling.  Business waste producers also demand such services. 

Viridor is one of two companies shortlisted for the final stage of the SWDWP PFI contract.

Our proposals outline a safe, proven and resource efficient solution for residual waste that will also help deliver higher recycling levels.

This will be achieved with the construction of a Resource Recovery Centre incorporating Energy from Waste (EfW), recycling and non-hazardous landfill disposal facilities at the disused New England Quarry, near Lee Mill and the A38. 

We anticipate our proposals will create 40 new jobs in the local area.

Viridor took on board comments and feedback received from considerable public consultation to date, to inform a planning application which was submitted to Devon County Council in January 2010.

We also submitted an Environmental Permit application to the Environment Agency in January, which sets out how the site will be operated to mitigate any potential impact on the local environment.

Whilst Viridor has submitted proposals designed to provide a solution for this PFI contract, the plans for New England have been developed independently of this process.
