Community and Environment

Viridor takes its responsibility to protect the environment very seriously. We also recognise we have a duty of care towards those people who live or work near to our facilities.

We will consider all the key environmental aspects of our proposed development in detail and take all necessary steps to maximise environmental and social benefits whilst minimising potential impacts

Our planning processes will ensure that:

  • Household waste transported to and from the facility will be fully contained to remove the potential for litter
  • Loading, unloading and all processing will take place within fully enclosed buildings
  • Potential risk of dust and odours will be minimised and all emissions will meet the most recent, rigorous standards set by the Environment Agency
  • Noise levels will be kept well within acceptable limits, for example by locating waste management activities as far as possible from surrounding residential areas and implementing effective mitigation measures in the design of the facility
  • The number of vehicles will be minimised and all deliveries will take place within specified operating hours only, using major routes that avoid main residential areas.

We continually measure the impact and benefits of our operations on the environment and invest in protection measures to ensure we maintain continuous improvement in environmental and health and safety performance.

In addition to improving waste management across Cheshire and maximising the efficiency and effectiveness of this service for all users, the proposal has a number of other benefits to the community including:

  • If successful, our proposals will create between 50-60 jobs and many more temporary jobs during construction of the facility - expected to take around two years
  • Goods and services used during construction and operation of the facility will be bought locally where possible, providing support to local businesses
  • Re-generation of the site will enhance the area by re-using derelict brown-field land and will feature environmental improvements such as landscaping and habitats to encourage nature conservation
  • The proposals will help provide renewable energy to local industry replacing reliance on fossil fuel sources and helping protect local employers from fluctuations in energy prices

Viridor would help to build on strong waste education and awareness programmes and campaigns developed by Cheshire County Council with our proposed Waste

Education and Visitor Centre at the MBT plant.

We would also work with the authorities to develop a complementary range of online and printed resources, providing clear and empowering information for residents.

Viridor considers all constructive feedback received during ongoing public consultation on its proposals, and will incorporate comment and suggestion where appropriate.

We also operate a ‘Good Neighbour Policy’, which includes regular community contact via site liaison group meetings. For further information or to get involved with a liaison group get in touch via the Contact Us page.
