Viridor’s plans have been developed in response to the need to maximise recycling and find an alternative, sustainable waste treatment option for residual household and business waste.
Materials Recycling Facility (MRF)
Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs) handle large volumes of municipal and commercial and industrial material, to produce a range of high quality outputs.
A combination of advanced mechanical sorting techniques and manual quality control is used to separate the materials.
The proposed Material Recycling Facility (MRF) at the Severn Road Resource Recovery Centre will process up to 150,000 tonnes per year.
Energy from Waste (EfW)
The proposed Energy from Waste (EfW) facility would be capable of treating up to 350,000 tonnes per year of residues from the MRF and other residual waste, supplying 30MW of electricity to the National Grid.
EfW is a controlled process using the most up-to-date equipment, much like a conventional power station.
The plant will meet stringent European Waste Incineration Directive (WID) standards and will be strictly regulated and monitored by the Environment Agency.
The facility will also need to be granted an Environmental Permit from the Environment Agency. The application for this permit will cover all possible impacts of the facility. The EA will only grant the permit once it is satisfied that the facility will be operated safely and without unacceptable impacts on the local community or the environment.
A full Environmental Impact Assessment has been prepared by independent experts, for submission with the planning application.
This study has covered the full anticipated effect of the facility on the environment, incorporating air quality, noise, traffic, visual appearance, ecology, archaeology, hydrology, hydrogeology and ground conditions.
The facility will incorporate bottom ash recycling that will treat the majority of residues from the EfW facility to produce aggregate material for the construction industry.
Visitor Centre
A Visitor Centre will also be included in the development, to enable community participation and the encouragement of waste reduction, recycling and energy recovery in Bristol and the surrounding area.
Proposed operational hours
The EfW facility will operate on a 24/7 basis. The MRF and bottom Ash facility may also operate according to these times.
Deliveries and exports may occur throughout the day and night but it is anticipated that the majority of deliveries will take place between 06.00 and 19.00.
