The proposed site, outside Ardley, north of Middleton Stoney, bordered by the M40, has excellent access to the road network and already accepts waste from Oxfordshire County Council and business customers from across the area for disposal.
As part of the planning application the proposals consider the effect of the facility on the road network when operating at maximum capacity.
At present, the landfill site generates around 140 trips per day which are mainly refuse lorries. The new EfW facility is expected to result in 65 new trips per day - this takes into account that some of the waste previously destined for landfill would be processed by the EfW.
The waste would arrive in refuse collection vehicles or heavy goods vehicles from ‘bulking up’ facilities elsewhere in the county.
Residual waste would be transported to the site using the existing road network.
Most deliveries to the landfill currently arrive outside peak times to reduce the impact on existing road users and this will continue with the new facility. During the morning peak, the facility would accept around 15 HGVs and the evening peak period would see around 10 lorry movements.
The traffic impact assessment concludes that the EfW proposals would cause a net increase of between one and five percent.
The impact is anticipated to be less than one percent through the village of Middleton Stoney in both morning and evening peak hours and the impact through Ardley village is expected to be around five percent.
These estimates are the result of extensive modelling of existing highways capacity around the key areas near the site such as the Middleton Stoney Crossroads and Junction 10 of the M40.
During the construction of the facility, Viridor would operate a Construction Phase Travel Plan and Vehicle Routing Plan to minimise disruption and reduce the impact on surrounding communities.
