Design and layout

The site for the proposed facility was chosen through an extensive and detailed selection process in which a number of possible locations and types of facility were considered.

A full Landscape and Visual Impact assessment has been prepared to consider the effect of the development on the local landscape.

The building has been designed to complement the modern technology it will contain and the surrounding countryside. It will sit low in the existing landfill site, which will be well landscaped.

This site and technology was chosen because it was the most suitable, when assessed against a range of environmental parameters and planning considerations.

At present the majority of the landfill operations are visible from the M40, however bunding, trees and hedges provide a good screen from the B430 and surrounding agricultural land.

The proposed facility has been designed to sit comfortably into the landscape. The restored landfill will also help reduce its visual impact, so it is unlikely to be seen from local homes or recreational amenities.

The facility will include a stack which will be approximately 80m high and surrounded by a russet brown coloured lattice. This has been designed to act as a focal point.

The main building would have a grey aluminium roof with translucent panels. These materials naturally weather to display neutral greens, softening the look of the building. Lower levels would comprise concrete walls concealed by walls of climbing plants on wire support structures.

The proposed offices and visitor centre, attached to the main building at the entrance, will have a striking copper-aluminium alloy shingle façade. Pale golden colours welcome visitors to the new facility and complement the advanced technology inside.

Outside, there will be 52 parking spaces with a lay-by for a visitor’s coach or minibus standing.

The Environmental Impact Assessment concluded that the existing quarry and landfill would have no significant impact on the proposed site.

Importantly, the Ardley site is already zoned for waste management as it is already an operating landfill site.

A route has been identified for creating an underground connection to the National Grid via a sub-station in Bicester.
