Composting

Revive compost packagingComposting is an excellent example of waste being recycled and re-used. Viridor manages and operates a number of sites that, under strict control procedures, produce compost in one of two ways: Windrow Composting and In-Vessel Composting.

Windrow Composting uses grass cuttings, leaves, weeds and hedge trimmings from Household Waste Recycling Sites and kerbside collections. Over 12 weeks it is shredded, mixed and placed into huge windrows, or elongated piles. The material is turned regularly to let oxygen circulate. Bacteria then breaks down the material to produce the heat which transforms and sanitises the product, turning it into rich, dark compost.

In-Vessel Composting (IVC) is a tightly controlled process which takes place in an enclosed building. Material is sorted, shredded and then matured. Viridor manages a number of IVC facilities in partnership with local authorities in the UK, supporting kerbside collections. Much of Viridor’s compost is accredited to the national BSI PAS 100 composting specification quality assurance standard, certified by the Association for Organics recycling.

Viridor’s own Revive compost is made from 100% natural, organic materials from the homes and gardens of Somerset. Revive is also proud sponsor of South West in Bloom, helping gardeners across the region reach the gold standard. With the rules of Britain in Bloom specifying that competitors use sustainable, recycled, peat-free products wherever possible Revive fits this challenge perfectly.
