Greater Manchester

In April 2009, Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority signed a 25 year recycling and waste  contract with Viridor Laing (Greater Manchester) Limited (VLGM); a partnership between Viridor and John Laing plc.

The £3.8 billion contract is Europe’s largest ever waste deal and includes a £631 million construction programme, creating a network of state-of-the-art facilities to treat Greater Manchester’s waste.

VLGM provides facilities and services to manage household waste across nine districts of Greater Manchester, in an environmentally and economically sustainable manner. This involves the reception, treatment and disposal of waste to increase levels of recycling, composting and recovery and reduce waste sent to landfill.

A network of new and redeveloped recycling and waste management facilities are being introduced across Greater Manchester.  Many Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC’s) have now been developed and offer an increased range of recycling opportunities as well as improvements to their layout.

The contract comprises:

  • A ‘clean'  MRF at Longley Lane in Manchester to sort kerbside collected recyclable material (cans, glass containers and plastic bottles).
  • Five mechanical biological treatment (MBT) facilities, four with anaerobic digestion (AD) plants at Longley Lane and Reliance Street in Manchester, Cobden Street in Salford, Bredbury in Stockport and Arkwright Street in Oldham.
  • Refuse Derived Fuel - approximately 275,000 tonnes - from the MBT process will be supplied by rail to the CHP generation facility at Ineos Chlor in Runcorn.
  • Continued operation of the Bolton Energy-from-Waste facility.
  • Four new enclosed in-vessel composting facilities to treat garden and kitchen waste at Bredbury in Stockport, Chichester Street in Rochdale, Over Hulton in Bolton and Nash Road in Trafford.
  • The continued use, with upgrades and improvements, of two Green Waste Shredding (GWS) facilities at Every Street in Bury and Longley Lane in Manchester.
  • Major refurbishment or the creation of new transfer loading stations at Raikes Lane in Bolton, Every Street in Bury, Arkwright Street in Oldham, Chichester Street in Rochdale, Cobden Street in Salford, Bayley Street in Tameside and Bredbury Parkway in Stockport.
  • A major overhaul of eighteen Household Waste and Recycling Centres across the Authority with continued use and improvement to a further seven.
  • Four waste education centres

Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) provides recycling and waste disposal services for 1,009,815 households in Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford. It handles around 5% of national municipal waste.

Recycle for Greater Manchester is a partnership between VLGM and the GMWDA to encourage the three R’s; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle to residents throughout Greater Manchester.
